# Planning, goals and KPIs

Connect business initiatives, measurable targets, source-backed actuals and the Tasks that move them.

## Connect the goal to the work

Use Boni Planning to see what your business is trying to achieve, the measured result so far and the work that moves it next. Open [Planning in Boni One](https://panel.boni.one/panel/planning) in the correct company workspace.

An **initiative** groups a business objective. Its **goals** hold targets and measured results. [Tasks](/tasks/overview) hold the actions, owners and deadlines. Completing a Task does not automatically change a goal's result.

## Review today

Start with **Today**: work to do now, decisions, blocked work and initiatives. **Targets and KPIs** compares the actual result with its target and plan, and shows the measurement date. A stale or missing result needs a fresh observation; it is not evidence of zero activity.

Open an initiative for **Tasks**, **Numbers**, **Blocked** and **Story**. Use the next action to decide what should happen, rather than treating a green work status as proof that the business target was met.

## Define a useful number

For each goal, agree:

- the result and its unit, such as orders, response time or revenue;
- the starting value, target and deadline;
- the source and the period the observation covers;
- the owner and next action.

Related numbers can explain a larger result. Keep currencies, reporting periods and one-time versus recurring revenue separate when comparing or combining them.

## Update a result

Choose **Update** on the relevant number. Enter the actual value, the date it was measured and a link or reference to the supporting evidence. Check the saved result and date after saving. Calculated totals come from their component numbers; update the underlying observation rather than replacing the total with a guess.

Use **Task** to assign the action needed to improve that number. Give it an outcome, an owner, a deadline and the relevant source. See [related work and AI chats](/tasks/related-work-and-sessions) for independently tracked pieces and execution context.

## Handle a blocker or decision

Record what is missing, who can resolve it and the next step. **Unblock** records what changed and the evidence; clear a blocker only after the dependency is actually resolved. A decision records the chosen course, not a fabricated result.

Your workspace membership controls which initiatives you can view and update. If Planning is absent, ask the workspace administrator to check the company's installed modules and your access. [Add a module](/modules/add-a-module) explains the setup path.
